COVID -19 17.9.2020 stage 1

Thank you for your support and understanding over the first two weeks of the new school year as we have adapted to the fast changing situation relating to Covid-19. We would now like to update everyone on our current plans in relation to changing government guidance and the increased challenges being presented by rising Covid-19 infection rates in Czech Republic.

As of Wednesday 16th September, we can confirm that we have only two cases schoolwide: one child and one administrative staff member (who has limited formal contact with students in an office). Both are doing well and recovering. We have two teachers and one class on quarantine, but all have received their first negative results and are going for their second tests over the next two days. We believe that our measures for protecting your children are proving effective, but we also want to keep working to reduce the chance of infection.

The first step is: please follow our Sunny Canadian School Covid-19 Handbook guidance for when and why to keep your children home in the event that they become sick or have contact with Covid-19 positive people. Follow this link to find the guidance. Remember to keep checking your children’s temperatures before they leave for school, because we will check them all and apply measures of safety from the moment they arrive at school according to this document link here.

  • In line with government guidance, any child who has been officially told to be in quarantine and their first test is negative, must have a second negative test at least 10 days after the first test. Then the child can return to school when those two test papers have been sent to both the class teachers (CZ & English teachers) and the two first stage Vice Principals (Mgr. Cintlova & Mgr. Pospisil).
  • If a child’s first test is positive for Covid-19, a whole different set of government rules apply. This is best discussed with the hygenic station (it is higher than us and changes regularly), however we can tell you this:
    • the child must remain at home in quarantine until a second test at least 10 days after the first.
    • If the child has mild symptoms or is asymptomatic, then quarantine of 10 days and one negative test is required to return to school.
    • If the child has more severe symptoms (discussed with a doctor likely), then the two negative tests rule applies. Please follow the hygenic station recommendations for these rules.

If you have any questions about any parts of this, please ask the school administration team. Teachers are busy teaching and reacting to changes throughout the day and they may not always have the most up-to-date information due to their schedules. It is our job as school administration to inform you of these changing rules; direct questions to Mgr. Cintlerova and Mgr. Pospisil or our front desk administrative team. Thank you.

For those Parents who want to request online learning:

Kindly note: Our online teaching primarily exists for helping families out during this unprecedented Covid-19 epidemic. It is not the ‘normal’ or best way of teaching in any circumstance. We want our students back in our classes as soon as possible.

Firstly, please know online teaching access is not immediate and will always take at least 8 working hours (one school working day) to administer - multiple people must be informed. This is best for our staff and for the students who are at home. First stage teachers must often change lessons quite a bit to make them work for blended learning. Also, we’ve been recommending teachers take classes outside when possible, so the online availability will not be possible for all lessons at all times unless clearly arranged through taking these steps listed below.

For any parent who is keeping their child home, you must email both teachers and both Vice Principals that you qualify to move to online learning due to 1 of the 4 reasons listed below. We enter your name into a spreadsheet available for all teachers to see - including P.E. and languages - and these teachers are often teaching in other areas of school and need time to adapt to this information. As stated above, this will start 8 working hours (one school working day) after you notify us so that teachers have time to prepare for switching their lessons into better online learning for your child. A Vice Principal will authorise teachers to go ahead as it is a whole team that must be informed.

  • Parents can only request online learning if:
  1. You have been told to stay home by the hygenic station (or a doctor) due to COVID contact or suspicion. (We need this official note.)
  2. Your child has tested positive for Covid-19 - you are obviously in quarantine and will need online lessons if you are feeling well enough to do so.
  3. Your child has had contact with someone who has tested positive, the hygenic station has contacted you for that child, and you want to keep your other children at home in quarantine while you get results for your children. We know that waiting for a test for one and sending the other to school is a risk we don’t want you to take. After one negative test for your
  4. Special circumstances: If your child is sick (i.e. the flu, bronchitus) and has been to a doctor and has a note to state that they are sick and will be off school for more than three days, you can request online learning. Please remember parents, that the best thing for small children to do to recover from normal sickness is to be in bed and rest, not to attend online lessons where they may increase their sickness symptoms (like headaches). Please do not request online lessons for small, normal things like stomach aches and runny noses. Having kids coming and going every day is not ideal for the students left in class or the teachers to create positive routines and structure in the classroom. As we have every normal school year, teachers will happily send work home for students who are absent due to normal sicknesses/absences via Skola Online and through normal email requests.

Our recommendations to you:

  • If your child has had direct contact with someone who has tested positive and you are concerned, but no hygenic station contact letter has come to you, trust your gut as a parent and contact your family doctor if a test is needed. This will be a choice best for your family, but not something we can react to as a school without the proper paper documentation.
  • Because government guidance requests that we focus as much as possible on outdoor learning, we will therefore take our lessons outside whenever we are able. These lessons cannot be delivered online for obvious reasons. Class teachers will notify you in email and put it on Skola Online when a lesson is taking place outside.
  • Online lessons will focus on academic subjects.
    • Most subjects except PE, art and music will usually be available online. If the classroom connection has not started in the first 7 minutes of the lesson, please assume that the lesson has perhaps moved outdoors or that the teacher has issues in the classroom that need her attention immediately. (Teachers will always try to let online learners know in advance if they are moving a lesson outside to reduce the risk of infection, but sometimes messages get mixed and lost in today’s communication).
    • Class content work is available on Skola Online.
  • If we have not been told in writing one working day before the absence that students will be learning online, our cameras and Google Meet videos will not be turned on. Please email your Vice Principals and grade teachers again if you were expecting to be notified and have not been.
  • Expectations of those students attending online lessons:
    • You must participate fully in the lesson with your camera on, including answering the teacher or working with others, if asked by the teacher.
    • You will complete all work the teacher sets in the class, including homework, on time. We expect the same of you as any other student sitting in the class.
    • All tests or assessments given in an online lesson will be discussed and graded as the teacher feels it fits best.
    • Students with permission to attend online who do not come to lessons will be marked absent.

Other adjustments we’ve made at school to help 1st Stage Students during this time:

  1. From today, our daily schedule has adjusted slightly to allow for a longer lunch time (increased from 45 minutes to 60 minutes). This was done by shortening the length of two passing times to 5 minutes. This will allow more time outside in the fresh air for students and reduce lines in the lunchrooms. You can see these small changes in your child’s schedule on Skola Online.
  2. From today, grade 1 & 2 morning and afternoon snacks will be delivered to the classrooms. This will improve the time spent hand washing for these young students before eating and reduce extra crowding in our buffet lines for the older students. Instead of the full buffet of choices, 2-3 choices will be available to these groups every day and will rotate. It will also improve the calm quiet these groups need to focus on eating their food in a limited time (15 minutes).

All students were informed of these changes this morning in our new weekly ‘Principal’s Word’ where every class logged on to a schoolwide Google Meets meeting and bilingual welcome message from Principal Machu and Vice Principal Pospisil. (We want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to the majority of our parents who sent students in proper Wednesday formal attire. The kids look GREAT today!)

We look forward to continuing to provide the safest, best possible learning experience to every single one of our students, in school or at home. Thank you again for all of your support as we all face unprecedented challenges in education. The current situation is not easy for any of us. We must not forget that the whole situation is very sensitive for our teaching staff and the announcement of any quarantines also affect their personal family lives. However, we believe strongly that through joint cooperation, patience, mutual support, and respectful communication, we can manage this very different school year which is ahead of us now.
